For almost two decades, the SINUMERIK 840D sl was the standard control for high-performance machine tools. That era formally ended on 1 October 2024, when Siemens moved the 840D sl to spare-parts-only status: no new units are supplied, more than 650 assemblies are affected, and all new CNC development now happens exclusively on its successor, SINUMERIK ONE.
If your machines run on the 840D — or its Powerline predecessors — nothing stopped working that day, and there is no reason to panic: Siemens is expected to support the 840D sl with spare parts for roughly the next eight to ten years. But something important did change. Every failure now draws down a finite pool of parts, availability will gradually tighten, and no new capability will ever be added — all development happens on SINUMERIK ONE. In other words: the 840D gives you a comfortable window to plan its succession properly. The owners who struggle are the ones who let that window close.
The good news: the successor was built for this moment
SINUMERIK ONE was designed specifically to take over from the 840D, and the transition is gentler than most owners expect:
- Your operators keep their knowledge. Siemens states 100% compatibility of programming and operation — the changeover is simple for the people, not just the machine.
- It is measurably faster. Siemens’ published data shows up to 30% shorter machining times in 5-axis finishing and up to 20% in 3-axis, compared with the 840D sl.
- Drives and motors are connection-compatible, which means retrofits can be planned in sensible stages.
- The digital twin changes commissioning. Work begins before hardware arrives; users report commissioning times cut from two weeks to two or three days.
Three ways forward for 840D owners
Run to failure and hope the spare is on the shelf; build your own spares stock at rising cost; or plan a control retrofit on your schedule instead of a breakdown’s schedule.
